9 Letter Words
The 240 most common English words with 9 letters, grouped alphabetically.

Nine letters is the far end of everyday English. Our word list holds 24,870 nine-letter entries, and most of them are specialist vocabulary that never reaches a puzzle, so this page shows the 240 that genuinely turn up in ordinary reading. At this length words are assembled rather than remembered, and they assemble in two ways. Many are compounds, two shorter words pushed together, and they come apart cleanly once you look for the seam: BREAKFAST, NIGHTMARE, FOOTSTEPS, NEWSPAPER, HONEYMOON, BOYFRIEND and OVERNIGHT all split down the middle. The rest are a root carrying a long ending, which is why EDUCATION, ATTENTION, DIRECTION and TRADITION run out on the same four final letters, and why HAPPINESS, DANGEROUS and DELICIOUS each announce their ending before their meaning. Set the length to nine in the filter, name the seam or the ending first, and the root usually falls out on its own.

Common questions
How do I solve a nine-letter anagram?
Take the ending off before you start rearranging. If your letters include T, I, O and N, park -TION at the back and only five letters are left to order, which turns EDUCATION or DIRECTION into a much smaller puzzle. The same works for -NESS in HAPPINESS and for -OUS in DANGEROUS and DELICIOUS. When no ending fits, try the compound reading instead: pull out a short everyday word such as FOOT, NEWS or NIGHT and see what the remaining letters spell.
Which nine-letter words are compounds?
BREAKFAST, NIGHTMARE, FOOTSTEPS, NEWSPAPER, HONEYMOON, BOYFRIEND, OVERNIGHT, UNDERWEAR and SOMETHING are all two words joined, and recognizing that is the quickest route into them. Compounds behave differently from built words in a grid, because the seam can fall anywhere rather than at a standard suffix. When a nine-letter answer resists the usual endings, reading it as two short words is the move that tends to crack it.
Why does this page show 240 words rather than all of them?
Because 24,870 entries would be unreadable, and most of them would cost you time. Nine letters is where a dictionary fills up with scientific names, rare inflections and words that live only in specialist writing, so a complete list buries the answer you are looking for. The 240 here are the nine-letter words that appear in ordinary English, which is where puzzle answers come from. When you do need the full list, the word finder tools below search all of it.
